Andrew Gates, Founder
Wheelhouse is the creation of Andrew Gates, a native Austinite with more than 20 years of experience in residential construction. Andrew began his project management tenure with publicly traded production builder Taylor Morrison. In 2006, he founded his own home building company, focusing on in-fill homes in central Austin. During the sub-prime fueled slow down in construction, Andrew took a slight turn, providing IT strategy consulting to large commercial general contractors. In 2015, Andrew returned to the Austin residential construction market, working for two Austin area custom builders.
It was his unwavering need to be intentional in his work that led Andrew to organize Wheelhouse as a vehicle to realize architect-driven homes on a fixed price basis.
Andrew is a fabricator at heart - the desire to build things has driven him since early childhood. It lead him to his first summer job on a construction site; his progression as a carpenter and woodworker landed him a scholarship to study furniture design as an undergraduate; the combination of his formal design education and his need to be intentional made working on architect driven projects a delight when many other builders found them laborious.
Andrew continues to design and build furniture, though strictly on a personal basis. Service to others has always been his most comfortable sanctuary - Andrew has built for Habitat for Humanity in Austin, Mexico and Guatemala. He spent two weeks in Haiti immediately following the 2015 Earthquake erecting temporary shelters. Today, he is teaching his kids the value of being of service to others by example; they are currently building a series of tiny houses for Casa Marianela, an Austin based non-profit that provides temporary housing for refugees upon their arrival.
